Lawrence County Public Library to Close for One Week

(Moulton, AL), (May 10, 2024) – The Lawrence County Public Library (LCPL) will be closed for a week, starting from Monday, May 27, and will reopen on Monday, June 3 at 9:30 a.m. This closure is due to budget constraints, as the library must close a minimum of four weeks during the year to stay within budget for fiscal year 2024.

The LCPL began implementing service changes in 2015, such as closing the library at 3:30 p.m. on Fridays, ending Fax, Copy & Print services 15 minutes prior to close, and locking the entrance five minutes before closing time. These changes were necessary to conserve funds after local budget cuts.

To continue receiving State Aid, the LCPL must remain open for a minimum of 40 hours per week when the library is open. However, due to the service changes, the library now depends on supplementing employee hours with volunteer hours.

The digital library through Camellia.Net will remain accessible 24/7, so patrons can continue to access the library's resources during the closure. The book drop will be locked to prevent any damages to the library's collection, and no fines will accrue during the closure.

While the LCPL regrets the closure, it is necessary to continue serving the residents of Lawrence County under financial constraints.
